It all started when...
I was born in New York into a very different world from what I have experienced in my adult life. From a young age, I was aware of turmoil in my personal surroundings, but tried to focus on the natural world around me for relief. I treasured a quiet life of introspection.
As I grew up, I grew calmer. I explored nature in my art. In reaction to living for eight years in the Caribbean, my Waves series evolved. Then I turned to the land and Branches. Eventually figures began to move in to the scenes. My art was always influenced by my surroundings, both physical and emotional.
I began to realize that the turmoil I thought I might have escaped through the contemplation of nature, was still all around me, now on the world stage. It was challenging to find respite. I turned to studying figures in major art museums and other public venues around the world, where humanity could still find calm in a world of increasing stress.
And although I often return to the natural world with my work, I find no matter where I look, there is another story to be told.
